For more than ten years, Mitie has supported Beatson Cancer Charity, raising vital funds and bringing people together in support of patients and families affected by cancer across the west of Scotland. What began as a single act of kindness has grown into a long-standing partnership that has now raised an incredible £222,359.94.
How It All Began
Mitie’s journey with Beatson Cancer Charity started with one colleague's personal experience.
As Raymond Murray, Regional Director for Mitie in Scotland, explains, the partnership began when a member of staff, Jackie Long, was receiving treatment at The Beatson and experienced first-hand the care and support the charity provides.
Moved by Jackie’s experience, Mitie decided to act. What started as a local fundraising effort quickly became something much bigger - the very first Mitie Charity Ball. More than a decade later, that event remains a cornerstone of Mitie’s fundraising calendar and a powerful symbol of how one person’s story can inspire long-term change.
Bringing People Together
Over the years, Mitie’s fundraising has gone far beyond one event. Colleagues, suppliers and customers have all played a role, contributing ideas, time and energy to support the charity.
For Raymond, this collective involvement is what makes the partnership so special.
Fundraising has become something that brings people together across the business - creating shared purpose, pride and a sense that everyone is contributing to something meaningful. From charity balls and sporting dinners to walks, golf days and virtual challenges, Mitie teams have shown that there are countless ways to get involved.
Fundraising Through the Change
One of the most standout moments in Mitie’s journey came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when traditional fundraising events were no longer possible.
Rather than pause their support, Mitie adapted. Colleagues across the business took part in a virtual walking challenge, logging miles wherever they could and gathering sponsorship along the way. At a time when fundraising was incredibly difficult, the initiative raised over £15,000, ensuring continued support for Beatson Cancer Charity when it was needed more than ever.
The Mitie Ball
Despite the many different activities over the years, the Mitie Ball remains a highlight.
Each year, as the final total is announced, it serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together for a shared cause. For Raymond, standing on stage and sharing that figure is a moment filled with pride - not just in the amount raised, but in the collective effort behind it.
Making a Real Difference
Through visits to The Beatson and conversations with the fundraising team, Mitie has seen first-hand the impact its support has.
The £222,359.94 raised helps Beatson Cancer Charity provide enhanced services that go beyond NHS funding, supporting patients and families at some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Whether it’s practical help, emotional support or simply being there when someone needs it most, the charity’s work makes a tangible difference every day.
Looking Ahead
After more than a decade of fundraising, Mitie’s commitment to Beatson Cancer Charity remains as strong as ever.
Inspired by the people they support and the difference their fundraising makes, Mitie will continue to stand with Beatson Cancer Charity for the foreseeable future - encouraging others to get involved, share ideas and be part of something that truly matters.
Beatson Cancer Charity would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to everyone at Mitie - staff, suppliers and supporters - who have contributed to this remarkable journey. Your dedication, compassion and generosity continue to change lives.
