Hi, I'm Kharis, I am a Hairdresser & Wig consultant at Beatson Cancer Charity. I have been with the charity for 7 months.
I love my job because we are able to help patients improve their self confidence and guide them through potential changes that may happen to their hair during treatment. Whether this be receiving a wig, a cut and blow-dry or a friendly conversation regarding hair advice. We are here to help and show what options are available. I feel my job is very rewarding and it is a privilege to support the patients at the Beatson.
At Beatson Cancer Charity, we know that hair loss can be one of the more visible and emotionally challenging side effects of cancer treatment. That’s why we offer a dedicated wig and headwear service to help patients feel more confident and comfortable. We spoke with our team to answer some of the most common questions about what to expect and how we can support you.
What causes hair loss during chemotherapy treatment?
Hair loss can happen during chemotherapy as this treatment is aimed to target all rapidly dividing cells in the body and hair is the second fastest dividing cell. Hair follicles in their growth phase are impacted by this resulting in hair loss. Hair loss can happen approximately two weeks after the commencement of chemotherapy although every individual can differ depending on their own treatment plan.
What causes hair loss during radiotherapy treatment?
Hair loss can happen during radiotherapy as this treatment can damage the hair follicles disrupting the normal growth cycle, this damage creates weakness in the follicle causing hair loss. The extent of hair loss will differ for each individual depending on radiation dose & the area being treated.
Where to go for wig?
In the Beatson Cancer Charity we have our own wig service located in our Wellbeing Centre on the fourth floor, we offer appointments to all patients looking for information or to receive a wig. Appointments can be made through phone call or from visiting our Centre. While receiving your wig prescription a list of salons who also offer a wig service will be given.
What to expect from your first appointment?
We recommend allocating an hour for your appointment. During this time we will have a consultation, try wigs on to find your cap size, and identify your preferred style and colour.
We will also answer any questions you may have and give advice.
What kind of headwear is recommended?
We recommend wearing headwear that suits your style and helps retain heat, as individuals often lose warmth through their scalp. Headscarves and caps are available in many colours and designs, making them a great option for staying warm and covered, especially when outdoors.
At home, soft cotton caps are ideal, they’re gentle on the skin and help keep the scalp warm.
