Beatson Cancer Charity’s 2025 Bauble Appeal has gained support from Grangemouth resident David Thom, who is sharing his story in the hope it encourages others to get behind the campaign this Christmas.

David, 58, was diagnosed with prostate cancer shortly after the death of his wife, Angie, last October. What followed was a difficult period, but he says the warmth and care he felt from Beatson Cancer Charity’s Wellbeing Centre on the fourth floor of The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre made a tremendous difference to him at a time when life felt particularly heavy.

David explained that his diagnosis came after noticing changes to his health:

“I was peeing a lot and my wife Angie had noticed it too. Sadly, Angie passed away last October and not long after that I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. They sorted it out quickly and I had a wee operation. After three months of recovery, I was given my radiotherapy dates.”

It was a friend who first told David about the services available through Beatson Cancer Charity’s Wellbeing Centre, based on the fourth floor of The Beatson. Walking through the door for the first time became a turning point.

“The Beatson Cancer Charity supported me the minute I walked in – and they’re still supporting me now. I was there for a month and was made to feel welcome every single day. It’s a happy, relaxing place. The staff could tell if you wanted a chat or if you needed some quiet. Even though many people are going through very difficult situations, it’s such an uplifting place.”

David often found himself encouraging others in the radiotherapy waiting room to visit the charity’s Wellbeing Centre.

“A lot of people didn’t realise it was there until I pointed it out. I know anyone who goes up will feel the same warmth I did.”

Christmas holds particular meaning for David and his family following the loss of Angie.

“Christmas is a time for us to come together. Life is so busy, and it can be hard to gather everyone, but we make the effort.  We sit and reflect on where we’ve been, the good times we’ve had, and we speak about people who have passed. It matters to share those stories.”

“We’re so grateful to David for choosing to share his story with such openness. His words highlight just how important it is for people to have a warm and reassuring place to turn to while they’re going through treatment.  By supporting the Bauble Appeal, you’ll help us continue offering care and comfort to people like David and their families, not just at Christmas but throughout the year.”
