We are inspired by the contribution our funded posts make to patients at The Beatson, including Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist Colleen Melville.

Colleen has worked within The Beatson for almost 10 years. Starting as a newly qualified nurse on ward B2 in September 2011, Colleen was there for 3 years and then worked in ward B4 for five and a half years. In both wards Colleen worked with patients with Germ cell cancers.

"I always found germ cell interesting and enjoyed working with this patient group so when the advanced clinical nurse specialist post came up I was very keen to apply and was delighted to find out I had been successful."

Colleen's role is to ensure the patients and their families have support throughout their care at The Beatson. That support can vary from visiting patients on the inpatient wards, helping out at the two Germ Cell clinics, making various referrals and attending weekly meetings, as well as organising follow up bloods and scans.

"The patients and their families know to contact me anytime if they need any advice or reassurance and this I think is the best part about the job, knowing I can help with any worries they may have and build a trusting relationship with them."

"Even though I have only been in post a few months I am really enjoying it and keen to learn more and about Germ cell tumours. I will be attending the National Germ Cell virtual conference in March which Beatson Cancer Charity has helped to fund."

We are committed to funding additional posts to support the ground-breaking work The Beatson does. We currently fund clinical nurse specialists, radiographers like Karen and research staff and aim to fund many more, to help in the fight against cancer. You can help us to raise money by signing up to one of our exciting  events, holding your own fundraiser or by simply making a donation.
