Elaine and her family’s fundraising achievements have been instrumental helping the charity towards creating a new online experience, a fitting legacy in memory of their daughter, Eilidh, who tragically died of a rare form of cancer at the age 22.

The McHugh’s story has helped bring together many people living in the shadow and fear of cancer.  Elaine who has experienced the painful loss of a child, has personally helped with the development of the services allowing the charity to reach out to more people who need advice and services.

Often family members are put in touch with support and the charity when it is too late.  Elaine wanted to change this and since 2017 managed to raise, through numerous events and initiatives, an incredible £300,000. Working closely with the policy and communications team, Elaine has created a solution that proactively connects services with people facing cancer, at every stage of their journey.

In turn she has invested and revitalised Beatson Cancer Charity’s website and digital experience and introduced a brand-new connected support platform feature called ‘My Light’.

This year’s shortlist includes 45 individuals and organisations from charities and voluntary groups across the country. Members of the public can have their say by voting for their favourite overall entry in the People’s Choice Award. Vote for Elaine by visiting the link below before 5pm on Friday 4 September 2020.

Surprised and overwhelmed, Elaine spoke of her excitement, saying:

I feel so proud to have been shortlisted as a finalist in the Charity champion category of the Scottish Charity Awards 2020. This has been an incredibly difficult time for all charities, and I am honoured to represent Beatson Cancer Charity, #TeamEilidh, my husband Michael and my very special daughter Kerry.

I believe Eilidh was really looking down on me when I found I had been nominated – her light is continuing to shine through.

Due to the impact of coronavirus, this year the Awards will run a little differently. Winners will be announced on 25 September (rescheduled from June) and will now take place online.

Anna Fowlie, Chief Executive of SCVO, said:

Much of the work celebrated this year predates the pandemic. All aspects of our lives have been disrupted in 2020. Our communities and the charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises they rely on have been under enormous pressure.

Scotland’s voluntary sector has never been more needed and will be essential to Scotland’s recovery. At SCVO we know that fantastic work is going on all the time and we are delighted to celebrate these achievements and successes through the Scottish Charity Awards.
