Throughout this uncertain time we have been blown away by the drive and enthusiasm of our volunteers.
Today, we're getting to know John who has been a part of the team supporting staff and patients directly at The Beatson, providing hand sanitiser at the entrances of the hospital.
What compelled you to volunteer during COVID-19?
I believe that these are unprecedented times that motivates all who are able to help out in anyway they can. I really had no hesitation to volunteer to save the main asset that is the NHS and to be part of Team Beatson during this time is particularly rewarding and in fact a great honour.
How are you keeping in touch with friends and family?
Aren’t we fortunate today to have the technology available to us to keep in touch with family and friends! This wouldn’t have been as possible say 15 years ago. What I’ve noticed is that folk who ignored keeping up to date with Zoom, Skype etc are now clambering around catching up – with some really funny results! Most common phrase I hear online is “I can see you! Can you see me?” Internet Hide and Seek!
What are you missing the most?
I’m a big sports fan – literally any sport so I’m really missing that. With the Olympics, Wimbledon and The Open being cancelled or postponed and football and rugby halted summer and beyond will be a real sporting oasis so that’s really disappointing for me. Let’s just hope that the weather “plays a blinder” and helps us through.
What’s the first thing you are going to do when lock down is over?
Get a haircut if possible! Hopefully that would put an end to me thinking I could cut it myself!
What are you looking forward to the most when the lockdown comes to an end?
I’d like to get out of Glasgow for a bit. As much as I love Glasgow I look forward to a walk in the countryside or somewhere by the sea.
Have you had any baking or DIY disasters?
I like smoothie drinks so I’ve set about making my own. I prepare and throw in all the things I like and get quite excited about what the results will be only to chuck most of it down the sink. I think the colour has a lot to do with their appeal so my brownish creations are, well, not attractive!
Do you have any box set, book or film recommendations?
I’ve watched Ozark on Netflix. If you liked Breaking Bad then you’ll like Ozark. Good storyline, unexpected action and good acting across all characters.
Have you been getting out for some daily exercise?
Yes I have, but not even half as much as said I would so I’m failing miserably. I try to vary between cycling, running and walking. It’s got to the point that a walk to the local shop justifies “a walk”. Pathetic I know.
Is there anything you are enjoying about having time at home?
I’ve caught up on paperwork and organising myself. Disturbingly I’ve discovered that I’m much further behind in these than I thought. What should’ve been a couple of days tidying up is now into its second week!
Do you have a message to share with our brilliant NHS and key workers?
As an “outsider” from industry and commerce I am genuinely astonished at the dedication of NHS staff and keyworkers. In a time that would test the patience and resolve of a saint they just seem to find another level of care and attention – truly inspiring to us mere mortals! They have stepped up to the mark time and time again in the most trying of circumstances without hesitation. Surely this will produce its rewards and recognition once this crisis is over.
