Volunteer - Jennifer Stewart

Throughout this uncertain time we have been blown away by the drive and enthusiasm of our volunteers.

Today, we're getting to know Jennifer who has been a part of the team supporting staff and patients directly at The Beatson, providing hand sanitiser at the entrances of the hospital.

What compelled you to volunteer during COVID-19?

I was being paid to work at home, but had lots of extra time and my company allowed us to volunteer. I have friends and colleagues working in The Beatson and I wanted to offer any help I could, they do such a great job .

Who is looking after you?

I am looking after myself at home alone, but I have a great support network of colleagues, friends and family.

How are you keeping in touch with friends and family?

I am keeping in touch by social media, online coffee meetings and video calls with family.

Who are you missing the most?

I miss most my little granddaughter who's 10 months and in London.

Any top tips for coping with lockdown?

My top tip is make the most of time outside, enjoy nature while the world is quieter.

What’s the first thing you are going to do when lock down is over?

The first thing I will do when allowed is take a trip to London to see my granddaughter.

The First Minister said that a Tunnock’s Caramel wafer is her favourite biscuit. Do you have a favourite?

My favourite biscuit is an Empire biscuit.

People across Scotland are now making (sometimes) disastrous attempts at cutting their own hair. Will you be cutting your own hair?

I have already had to trim my fringe and colour my roots, thankfully without incident

Have you been getting out for some daily exercise?

I am cycling every day and doing an online fitness class most days.

Do you have a message to share with our brilliant NHS and key workers?

My message to NHS and key workers is thank you, you always do an amazing job, but during this time you have gone above and beyond to keep us well.

Thank you for your time Jennifer, and for all the wonderful volunteer work you're doing!

Why not read about our other Volunteer Star Ellys here who is also helping at The Beatson during these times.
