Hamish has gone through a lot over the last year, he explains in his own words the challenges with treatment, how the charity have supported him and why he is giving his commitment to help more people.

“When I arrived at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, I’d just been diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic melanoma. I didn’t even know what that was; I’d recently run a marathon and apart from a sore shoulder, I felt fine. I was far from it.

Since then I’ve undergone brain surgery, radiotherapy and am currently receiving immunotherapy. It’s been challenging in a lot of ways, and at one stage I lost the ability to walk.

However, thanks to Team Beatson I am back on my feet, and in June this year, I completed the walk of a lifetime in recognition of the tremendous dedication and support I have received from everyone at Beatson Cancer Charity and The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.

From the friendly hello at the welcome desk to the tranquillity of the Wellbeing Centre; from the support of my Beatson Cancer Charity funded Specialist Clinical Nurse, to the investment in life saving research, Beatson Cancer Charity keeps on giving to those who need it most.

I don’t know what the future may hold for me but I know I am in safe hands. Now I want to show Beatson Cancer Charity my commitment, knowing that I am helping to support people and families affected by cancer."

On 22nd May 2019, Hamish and his wife Muriel set off on their 100-mile journey of a lifetime walking from Beatson Cancer Charity’s offices to the top of Ben Nevis.

Members of Team Beatson joined Hamish, Muriel and friends on their final leg of the journey – climbing Ben Nevis. It was no ordinary climb, as we took the familiar Beatson tea trolley with us to the summit for a well-earned cup of tea.

Hamish’s first encounter with Beatson Cancer Charity was when he saw the tea trolley doing the rounds at The Beatson, so it was quite fitting that it had its place in this incredible journey.

Hamish raised in excess of £40,000 to help support people and their families affected by cancer.

“I walked from the Beatson in Glasgow to the top of Ben Nevis for Beatson Cancer Charity so others can receive the same amazing support and kindness that I have done. It's was a big challenge but I made it”
