Today is #WorldNoTobaccoDay  which aims to raise awareness of the effects tobacco has on the health and support individuals through their quitting journey.

You'll feel the benefits of stopping smoking tobacco from the very first day. You'll drastically improve your overall health and reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer. Stopping smoking tobacco can also enable you to focus on more positive activities in your life. Your improved lung capacity will help you to become more physically active. This in turn can have a beneficial impact on your mental health and wellbeing.

No Smoking Day

Here are some facts about smoking tobacco and cancer:

  • Lung cancer is responsible for around a quarter of cancer deaths in the UK, and 90% of those lung cancer cases are related to smoking.
  • The use of tobacco is one of the major causes of various types of cancers including — lung, mouth, throat, pancreas and the bladder. 
  • Almost half of all cancers are tobacco-related
  • Lung cancer rates amongst Scots men have fallen dramatically over the past 20 years due to a significant fall in smoking rates in men. Despite this, it remains the most common cause of cancer in men.
  • Every year, around 100,000 smokers in the UK die from smoking related causes.

On a more positive note:

  • In Scotland – adult smoking declined from 30.7% in 1999 to 22.9% in 2012. 
  • If smokers quit before the age of 30 they can avoid almost all of the risk of lung cancer attributable to smoking.
  • Adult second-hand smoke exposure in Scotland has also seen a big decrease in Scotland - from 33% in 1998 to 18% in 2012.
  • By stopping today it greatly help to reduce cancer risk in many cases.
