Beatson patient Ronnie Thompson has own song performed by well-known folk musician Alastair McDonald

22nd May 2014

We meet so many amazing people at the Beatson and one of them is Ronnie Thompson who is currently a patient at the Beatson. Ronnie is extremely talented and recently wrote a song during his treatment. As a visitor to the charity's wellbeing centre, the staff quickly got to know Ronnie and found out about his songwriting skills. With the help and support of the Hospital Broadcasting Service, which has been entertaining patients for more than 40 years, Ronnie was put in touch with well-known entertainer, musician, folksinger and broadcaster, Alastair McDonald, in the hope that he would record his song for him. When Alastair heard about Ronnie he acted straight away and visited him at the Beatson to read the words to "Take Some Time" for himself. He was truly inspired by Ronnie's talent and determination that with the help of the Hospital Broadcasting Service and presenter Peggy Mack he recorded the song which is now played through the week on the much-loved radio station. The song has now been made available for all to enjoy and the proceeds will go to the Beatson Cancer Charity.Thank you so much Ronnie, Alastair, Peggy and the whole team at the Hospital Broadcasting Service for making this possible. We are so grateful to you all and hope the single does really well! Here are the beautiful words - Waking up each morning feeling everything is fine, who knows what’s ahead of us just looking down the lineThe sun is up there shining on another busy day, but take some time to talk to someone you’ll meet on the wayTake some time to show someone they’re not just here alone, everyone around you at the window, on the phoneEven in a busy place, don’t say “It's just another face” but each of us a pilgrim on the road that takes us homeLife is ours for living it’s a sign we can’t let go, getting past the heartbreak or the ache from head to toeShare a thought with someone and feel the joy once more, the next time you hear knocking it may be upon your doorTake some time to show someone they’re not just here alone, everyone around you at the window, on the phoneEven in a busy place, don’t say “It's just another face” but each of us a pilgrim on the road that takes us home“No man is an island” so a famous man once said, we all need one another just to earn some daily breadBut no one lives by bread alone it’s love that sets us free, so show these words upon your face for everyone to seeTake some time to show someone they’re not just here alone, everyone around you at the window, on the phoneEven in a busy place, don’t say “It`s just another face” but each of us a pilgrim on the road that takes us homeIf you would like to do something to support the Beatson, why not click here to find out how you can.Pictured: Ronnie Thompson with Alastair McDonald strumming away on their guitars at the charity's wellbeing centre.
